Although they are an advantage to energy savings, two stage compressors are effective, but not completely necessary to reduce your electric bill. Basically, some of the time, the compressor will be running at about 60% capacity and thus use only 60 % of the energy it would normally use. Let’s say you’re out of town for the weekend and come home Sunday night.
When you turn on the A/C, the two stage compressor will come on at 100%. Once all of your furnishings and the air equalize in temperature and the unit kicks off, next time it will only come on at 60%. This will save you additional money on your utility bill. You will usually pay more up front for the two stage, but it will save you money in the long run. Consider it one of the “bells and whistles” like heated seats on a new car. They’re nice but not completely necessary to experience a substantial energy savings.
